Three generations explores maternal relationships, changing bodies, and healing. After a breast cancer diagnosis in 2016, my grandmother underwent a double mastectomy and chose to forgo reconstructive surgery. In 2017, after finding out breast cancer would be unavoidable due to her genes, my mother also underwent a double mastectomy. However, she chose to have reconstructive surgery. And I, the third generation, was witness to their pain, their healing, and their changing bodies. My hope for this photo series was not only to capture the power in our shared relationship but to create a space for my mother and grandmother to exist in their bodies exactly as they are, scars and all.
